The trademark of the Wachau region

The Wachau apricot is a speciality known and recognised throughout Europe, one of the few Austrian products that is protected as a separate brand within the EU. Anyone who tries apricots from different regions of origin will immediately recognise the special characteristics of Wachau apricots.

From blossom to harvest

In the Wachau region, everything revolves around the famous apricot. It shapes the landscape, the taste and the attitude to life in the region, making every visit a taste experience.

The distinctive quality of Wachau apricots (Protected Designation of Origin [PDO]) is the result of the interplay between climate, soil and centuries of cultivation. The coexistence of different climates (Pannonian Basin and Waldviertel, proximity to the Danube – the so-called “aroma belt”), together with the large temperature differences between day and night, especially during the ripening phase, has a direct influence on the taste, aroma and content of the fruit. Apricot cultivation in the Wachau region has additional significance for tourism due to the characteristic blossom of the apricot trees.

The name “Wachauer Marille” is a protected designation of origin within the EU.

Hiking for apricots

Hike through the apricot orchards and vineyards, look around and enjoy. It is particularly impressive when there are also interesting and useful facts to learn about this sweet little fruit.
